So today we had a special guest at the LSE. The Anthropology dept hosted a talk by Sherry Ortner for MSc and MPhil/PhD students, following the showing of her film Sherpas. It was very interesting, because if you look at Dr. Ortner's work on the Sherpas, you can see some of the evolution of modern anthropological thought. Besides, the Sherpas are neat. A few random notes about the presentation (and the group itself).
*Before the showing I fell asleep in the Seligman while listening to NIN. Damm was I tired.
*There is one in every group. I didn't think we had one, but we do: a white girl/boy with nasty-ass dredlocks. Why can't I escape these people and what they hell do they think they are doing !?!
*Yaks are good. This film has some yaks in it.
jonesyak I think you would enjoy it (maybe even beyond the yaks). It's part of the "Disappearing Worlds" series, and like most of those films is fairly well done and interesting, esp. for the time period.
*Sherry Ortner is a very comfortable-looking woman. Kind of reminded me of Dr. Joyce Hammond (a prof I wished I'd gotten to work with).
After the film I went out with 3 of my fellow students to the Beavers Retreat (one of 2 pubs on campus). It was really fun, but after 2 pints of cider I was pretty buzzed. Proof that (a) I haven't been drinking recently and (b) booze on an empty stomach is bad. I really had fun though, and I'm glad I agreed to go. There's nothing like 4 anthropologists sitting around BSing about everything from men's balls to Columbine. I didn't get home until 10. Now I'm going to go to bed. Sleepy Kyna
