Cooking for One
Apr. 10th, 2003 08:50 pmThere is something horridly indulgent about spending 2 hours cooking dinner for just yourself. Timing everything so that it is all finished at the exact same moment, balancing seasoning, slicing and chopping, testing, and finally plating your food so that it looks attractive. Only to sit down alone with headphones and the literary supplement from the Sunday paper. To cook for two is an act of love, for a crowd, an act of family. What is it to cook for yourself, rather than heating up a can of soup and crackers?
This is what I thought about while making chicken adobo, rice, and vegetables for myself this evening. Probably the most I’ve used my brain all day. I kept meaning to get stuff done, but instead I putzed on the net, finished my novel, and took a nap. Ah well, there is always tomorrow.
